Retinol Fatigue: Are We Falling Out of Love With Aggressive Actives?

For years, we’ve been told that if our skincare isn’t tingling, peeling or making us look slightly alarming for a week, it probably isn’t working.

Retinol became the poster child for this way of thinking. Powerful? Absolutely. Well researched? Yes. But somewhere along the way, irritation almost became a badge of honour. Redness, dryness and flaking were simply things we were expected to push through in the pursuit of better skin.

I’m not sure skincare needs to be quite so dramatic.

At Floragy, we’ve always believed in working with the skin rather than constantly challenging it. And through my work as a holistic facialist, I’ve seen more and more people coming through the door with skin that feels stressed, reactive and overwhelmed. Often they’re doing everything they’ve been told is “right”: acids, retinol, vitamin C, exfoliation, multiple serums. Yet their skin isn’t particularly happy about it.

Have we reached peak active?

The beauty industry loves an active ingredient. And to be clear, there’s nothing inherently wrong with that. Actives can achieve brilliant results.

The problem comes when skincare starts to feel like an arms race. Higher percentages. Stronger formulas. More steps. Another acid. Another peel. Another product promising to transform your skin overnight.

Our skin barrier has the rather unglamorous job of keeping the good stuff in and the bad stuff out. When we repeatedly disrupt it, skin can become dry, tight, sensitive and reactive. Exactly the opposite of the healthy, comfortable skin many of us were trying to achieve in the first place. Perhaps the next evolution in skincare isn’t about finding something stronger. Perhaps it’s about getting smarter.

From anti-ageing to skin longevity

This is a shift I find much more exciting. Instead of constantly trying to correct, resurface and fight our skin, we can start thinking about how we support it over the long term.

For me, good skincare should help skin remain hydrated, resilient, comfortable and functioning at its best. That means supporting the barrier, nourishing the skin and choosing active ingredients carefully rather than throwing everything at it at once.

It’s also why I think the language of “anti-ageing” increasingly feels outdated.

We’re all ageing. Personally, I’d rather have healthy, glowing skin at every age than spend my life attempting to wage war against the passing of time.

Why we created Flourish differently

This thinking was a huge part of the development of Flourish Serum.

We wanted the benefits people seek from a retinol product, such as smoother texture, brighter-looking skin and a more even complexion, without creating a formula that felt aggressive.

At the heart of Flourish is RetinART®, a marine bio-retinoid alternative to traditional retinol. We combine it with Niacinamide, Vitamin C, Lactobacillus Ferment and Olive Squalane to create one multi-benefit serum.

The intention was simple: serious skincare doesn't have to feel harsh.

Rather than building a complicated routine around one powerful active, Flourish brings several complementary ingredients together in one formula designed to support the skin as well as improve its appearance.

It represents where I think Floragy is as a brand too: intelligent ingredients, naturally derived where possible, thoughtful formulations and a much greater emphasis on long-term skin health.

Maybe gentle isn't the opposite of effective

I think this is the misconception we need to leave behind.

Gentle skincare can sometimes be dismissed as skincare that doesn't really do anything. And aggressive skincare can feel reassuringly scientific because we can physically see or feel it doing something.

But discomfort isn't a measure of effectiveness. Your face doesn't need to sting for you to know you've got your money's worth.

For some people, traditional retinol will continue to work brilliantly and there's no reason to abandon something your skin genuinely loves. But if your bathroom cabinet has started to resemble a chemistry lab and your skin is constantly asking for a day off, it might be worth listening.

A calmer way forward

This is really where our philosophy at Floragy has landed after seven years of creating skincare and three years of me working hands-on with clients' skin. Support rather than overwhelm. Nourish rather than strip. Work with the skin rather than constantly trying to outsmart it.

That doesn't mean abandoning science or active ingredients. Quite the opposite. It means being more considered about the ingredients we choose, how we formulate them and what we're actually asking our skin to tolerate.

Maybe retinol fatigue isn't really about retinol at all. Maybe we're simply becoming tired of the idea that good skincare has to be aggressive to be effective.

And personally, I think our skin will be rather relieved about that.

Why Gentle Skincare Often Works Better Than Harsh Actives

A calmer, more supportive approach to skincare can often do more for your skin than harsh formulas ever could. There’s a lot of noise in skincare telling us that stronger means better. Stronger aci...
