Sometimes our best products start with a very simple question: what does your skin actually need?

Over the last 6 years, with Floragy and through my work as a holistic facialist, I’ve spoken to so many people struggling with skin that feels dry, reactive, uncomfortable or difficult to manage. For some, it’s seasonal dryness, hormonal changes, lifestyle factors. For others, it may be skin that is prone to eczema or dermatitis. And often, the biggest frustration is simply not knowing what to put on it.

When skin is already feeling sensitive, the last thing you want is a long routine, lots of active ingredients or a product that makes things feel more complicated. That was really the starting point for Calmer Balm.

We wanted to create something simple, comforting and dependable. A balm you could reach for when your skin feels like it needs a little more support, without fragrance, essential oils or unnecessary extras. Something suitable for both face and body, and something that could fit easily into everyday family life.

But simple doesn’t mean easy to formulate.

Calmer Balm has actually been two years in the making. We spent a long time refining the texture, the balance of ingredients and the overall feel of the product because we wanted it to do more than simply coat dry skin. We wanted it to feel nourishing and protective, but still silky and beautiful to use.

As part of that process, we worked with the same cosmetic chemist who helped us develop Flourish, our bio-retinoid serum. Working with a chemist gave us the opportunity to really look at the formula in detail, improve it and make sure every ingredient had a purpose.

The skin barrier became a big part of that process. When skin is very dry or compromised, its protective barrier may not work as effectively as it should. Moisture can escape more easily and the skin may become more prone to dryness, tightness and irritation. So rather than trying to create a product that promised to do ten different things, we focused on one clear idea: to nourish the skin, support its barrier and help it feel more comfortable.

That thinking shaped the ingredient list.

Calmer Balm contains Shea Butter to deeply nourish and help protect dry skin, alongside Oat Lipid Oil, which is rich in skin-supporting lipids and particularly suited to dry and sensitive skin. Squalane helps soften and moisturise, while oils including Camellia, Cucumber, Kiwi Seed, Sunflower and Hemp provide additional nourishment and help keep the skin feeling supple.

We also included Calendula and Bisabolol for their calming, comforting properties, alongside Vitamin E. The formula is completely unscented, with no essential oils or added fragrance, because we wanted to keep it as gentle and uncomplicated as possible.

Just as importantly, we wanted Calmer Balm to feel good to use.

Products created for very dry or eczema-prone skin can sometimes feel quite clinical, but we didn’t want that. We wanted Calmer Balm to still feel unmistakably Floragy: thoughtful, comforting and enjoyable to apply. The texture melts into the skin and can be used wherever you need it most, whether that’s your face, hands, arms, legs, elbows or particularly dry areas.

“If your skin is feeling particularly dry, I like to apply Calmer Balm shortly after bathing or showering while the skin is still slightly damp. You don’t need a huge amount. Gently massage it in and give it a few moments to settle into the skin.”

One of the most important parts of the development process has also been listening to what skin issues people want to improve. We wanted to understand how dry and eczema-prone skin affects everyday life, what people find frustrating and what they actually want from a product.

That feedback reinforced something we already believed: people don’t always want another complicated skincare solution. Sometimes they simply want something gentle, reliable and easy to use. Something they can feel confident reaching for when their skin needs it, and that’s really where the name Calmer came from too.

We didn’t want to make unrealistic promises or position the balm as a cure. We wanted the name to reflect the feeling behind the product: comfort, simplicity and a little more calm for skin that can sometimes feel anything but.

After two years of development, testing, refining and working closely with our chemist, Calmer Balm is finally the product we wanted it to be. A simple, nourishing balm created with very dry, sensitive and eczema-prone skin in mind, made for skin that needs a little extra care.
